Buerhas, leading workforce analyst, says that there is a need for a comprehensive national strategy to address the shortage of nurses. He proposed that there should be programs to encourage people to recruit and train nurses. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2.5 million Registered Nurses are currently working in the U.S. but they are not enough to meet the increasing demands for health care. Studies show that only 61% of Americans were aware of a nursing shortage and 53% think that nurses are underpaid. However 70% view the nursing career as a positive one. Perhaps American people just need awareness and motivation to overcome the shortage that’s been plaguing the state of healthcare in the nation.

According to Peter Buerhaus, a leading work force analyst, the demand for nursing, which began in 1998, will reach 500,000 by the year 2025. This is caused by an aging nursing work force and an increase in demand for health care from 78 million patients that will turn 65 years old. This is good news for nurses but bad news for the nation as a whole. “A shortage that size could incapacitate the health care system,” comments Buerhaus. The small number of nurses will lower the quality of health care and cause more infections, falls, cardiac arrests and medication errors.

According to US News & World Report, midwives are crucial to maintain the health of the nation. Working hand in hand with physicians, they would greatly improve the provision of healthcare of the nation. Access to midwifery care decreases complications that can be prevented by adequate prenatal care, save women from C-sections and decrease delays in treatment for women who need physical examinations and contraception. Also, a survey conducted by American Baby magazine reveals that mothers who received midwifery care spent more time with their midwife, experienced fewer medical interventions, and required less medication than those whose births were attended by doctors.

Nursing home inspectors are not doing their job well. This is because deficiencies present in state nursing homes are often overlooked. According to a report, in nine states (Alabama, Arizona, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee and Wyoming ) federal officials discovered that state inspectors did not notice at least one serious deficiency at nursing homes in 25% of the inspections they have done.
A few examples of these deficiencies are malnutrition, bedsores, wrong dosage of medications and abuse and all of these threaten the safety of the patients. According to agreements stated in a contract, state inspectors visit nursing homes once a year to check whether these homes meet federal standards.
